- Calling from there to here is expensive, so if possible, arrange for people to call you at the motel
- Payphones usually don’t take change; rather, they use phone cards which can be purchased from local shops
- Others can be used with credit cards (expensive)
- Avoid making calls from motel rooms
- If you have a GSM-capable mobile phone (e.g. from AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) and your phone is unlocked, you can buy a SIM card for a few Euros, which comes with a number of minutes you can use for local and international calls
- If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked, talk to your phone company. If you've been a customer for a while (a year or more), they will often unlock it for free.
- Many websites provide information on how to unlock your phone, if your phone company will not do it for you, or if you want to bypass them
